At a gala ceremony at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, a group of real climate heroes were honoured with Climate and Clean Air Awards for actions they have taken to reduce short-lived climate pollutants and protect the climate. Climate-KIC Alumni SimGas was honoured with one of the Climate and Clean Air Awards in the category Innovation for developing and distributing highly innovative and affordable biogas systems that are easily installed and maintained.
SimGas, founded in 2009, developed a clean cooking solution based on renewable energy in rural East Africa. Biogas, a 100% clean cooking fuel generated by digesting cow manure, can really make a difference, where dairy farming is the main occupation of rural households. Using domestic biogas also has the potential to eliminate one of the world’s top causes of death and disease.
The biogas systems uses waste to generate gas for cooking that results in reductions in black carbon and CO2 emissions within homes, replacing traditional household energy sources such as wood and charcoal.
